A thrilling, fast paced story. A great read with constant action.
This disturbing novel does not let up as a resourceful unarmed teen and his frightened little brother try to pick off a crazed, murderous gang leader, Darnell, and his pals. Ratching up suspense, the author shows Mike making quick decisions about getting aid without endangering helpers. The dark-hours, snowy setting is a somber part of the nightmare, as Mike and Joey are chased on foot and then train with Darnell hanging outside the back car.
Each gang member is a person, not just a bad guy. Several are quite intelligent. Two want to be the next leader soon, each planning a different approach. Another wants out. My favorite is a natural accountant with ingenious ideas for turning the gang's drug earnings into millions.
Mike repeatedly calms Joey and Joey responds bravely. On this level, STONY ISLAND RANGERS is about a teen's love and assumption of responsibility for his brother no matter what.
No spoilers in my review, but this book is not for sissies.
I read the book in a single setting. Once you start you cannot put it down. A fast paced thriller with obstacles at every corner. As Mikey and his little brother Joey escape the clutches of a gang leader, they face problem after problem you, the reader, will cheer them on every step of the way. A must read.
